Monitor squealing :'(

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-08 15:10

I found an old 19'' "RIC x-970" monitor in my basement. I'm currently using it as the secondary in a dual monitor setup. I found drivers off the internet, but they dont seem to set limits for refresh rate/resolution, so I dont know what use they are. However, I could not find the specs on this monitor anywhere. So I have no idea what it officially can support. After being on for about 6 hours yesterday, it started to whine, really high pitched, not very loud. It is my understanding that this is a sign of a component failing. Today I had it on for about 2 hours before it started to whine. I was runing it at 1280x1024 @ 60hz x 32bit just to be safe, but to get it to stop whining i had to drop it to 48hz, and now it looks like shit. HALP PLZ

60 Hz should be good enough.

Maybe try dropping your color depth to 16bit.

Or maybe this is a case of "singing" capacitors?

Color depth and resolution didn't stop it, what is the diagnosis for "singing" capacitors?

It supports 60 Hz, otherwise it woudln't ahve worked for 2 hours. It's just broken.

ok, i'm running it at 48hz, interlaced, it looks lol. but no more sqealing :S.

maybe if you blink your eyes real fast you can increase your picture quality.

It's a 19" CRT for fuck's sake. You need AT LEAST 85 Hz for it to not be a serious threat to your eyes and an instant headache machine. Trash it and get a new 19" CRT.

I wonder if I listen to the "singing" long enough, if it'll ruin my ears and I wont be able to hear it anymore.. Hmmm...

GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE, IT'S GOING TO EXPLODE.

The problem seems to be small horizontal frequency variations in some digital regulation circuit of the CRT board. To calculate horizontal timings, the board must be trying to find the inverse of the horizontal frequency. Having a relatively low maximum Hfreq, the algorithm warps and gives 0. The monitor attempting to divide 1/0 creates a space-time anomaly from which sound from the Big Bang billions of years ago warps in. If you don't switch off the monitor, you'll experience a time paradox. In case of explosion, do a barrel roll.

I've had a few older monitors whine at specific resolutions and refresh rates, tinkering with one or the other generally got rid of it.  Try turning your resolution down, such would make higher refresh rates a bit easier on the monitor.

1. GO TO GOODWILL
2. BUY MONITOR FOR $5.99
3. ??????
4. PROFIT

The second monitor doesn't need to be good to run the GIMP.

Lol, that's what I thought when I've heard of two monitors, I was like "GIMP user..."
