Borked Hard drive?

Name: Irrelevant 2006-10-07 15:37

Hey again 4chan.

So... it seems my drive has stopped working. It's a 250gb Seagate in an Ultra enclosure.

When I plug it in/turn it on, I get a few different errors - at first, "The specified I/o Operation on Device/HD15/whatever has timed out." If I ignore those or ask it to continue, I can get to the drive. Sometimes (last week) I could access its contents. Now it either says that it needs formatting or that the semaphor period has timed out.

Sigh.

Any recommendations? The data is more important than the drive. I'd guess that the MBR of the drive is screwed up in some way, since the Logical Disk Manager doesn't note that it's FAT32 or has any filesystem on it (when the LDM even notices it).

Oh, and chkdsk crashes when it tries to look at it. :P

Oh, and I did try it outside of its enclosure.

Backup data immediately (Google recovery tools if necessary), save data into new HD, trash faulty HD.
