I'm looking for a good codec to use when re-encoding movies to save on hard disk space.
DIVX is filled with adware and I'm sure there are better ones out there to be used.
I've heard both good and bad things about h.264 and was wondering what is the best one to use and where should I get it from to keep the bloatware off my computer.
Thanks

Xvid or H.264. They can both be great if you know how to use them.
I used to use divx 3.11 alpha myself (not the same thing as DIVX), but mostly because it encoded really really fast compared to h.264 or xvid.. not that great a codec otherwise, seeing as it's ancient.
You can find any codec with google, x264 is a h.264 codec you could look for, altho I dunno if there are any better ones.
