How can I make my computer private?

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-01 21:20

K, first, let me say I've never been laughed harder. So, my mother decides to snoop around on my computer (I usually leave it at the sign on screen, with a password) but I've been lazy lately and let a bunch of porn pile up on my desktop, and well, she found them etc but is too embarrassed to talk to me about it. My step-father told me he doesn't care anyways. I feel pretty violated, but who wouldn't? I made a dumbass mistake, and she was being a snooping bitch/ "good parent". ANYWAYS, I'm not computer illiterate, per se. Though, I've never messed around with the tech of it, ms dos, system files etc. I just use it for games, internet, chat, porn, etc. I've been told, by my mother, that she can go in and bypass the sign in screen with safe mode. I haven't tried it, never needed to. Butttt, if that's possible, she could get in no matter what I do, amirite? Is there anyway I can crypt my files/computer so that it needs several sign ins/ inability to access through safe mode, etc? I'm prepared to be wangslapped for my stupidity, but some tips would be appreciated as well.

C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\fsrt
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\fgsfds

Problem solved.

if you have admin rights, just change all the passwords on the computer INCLUDING the admin password.

I'm not the OP, but this doesn't make a difference. I buy alot of used computers, or am given computers to fix, and if they can't get aroudn a pass, all you do is press (I think) f12 or whatever when it's starting up, and safe mode opens it without a pass word needed. Done it on XP a ton of times.

your most secure solution lies in one of these ideas:
 - first, get a good cookie/temp file cleaner.
 - second, get a disk-free-space wiper to render deleted files unrecoverable (sysinternal's SDelete is good).
 - stop being lazy and A) burn private files to cd/dvd and then B) use above programs.
 - or, invest in a decently sized external hd to put your stuff on.  try to get an external hd that does not require plugging in the wall (a laptop external hd) for maximum convenience.

your mom probably does not know the ins and outs of the windows filesystem and you can probably hide stuff in a nonstandard directory.  Try making a folder in the WINDOWS directory and giving it a good innocuous name, like SystemDrivers or something like that.

Just if it's one of these damn pre-installed Home-versions without admin-passwords. As soon as his mothers finds out how to use a Linux-live-CD and mount the drives, this won't be enough, tho.

Set all passwords. AFAIK safe mode will still ask for passwords.

But pr0n are just regular files. No need to hide them or anything. It's not a problem if they see it, is it? Don't tell me you're embarrassed. It's just your standard entertainment and a good reason to have a computer. Everybody looks at it; the ones who say they don't lie.
