Computer Freezing

I'm atempting to diagnose a problem with a friends computer.
Issue: Irregularly (and regardless of program use) the computer freezes (standars input has no effect, its like looking at screenshots). Additionaly, there is a slight ammount of line noise from the speakers.

I am wondering what are some of the most likely causes.
Personaly, I believe it to be something with the Motherboard, be it a IRQ conflict or BUS issue.
