Hard drives disappearing randomly

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-18 2:26

I have had this problem quite a few times, and so has the rest of my family, and I just wanted to ask you guys about it.
What happens is that my computer is on, and a hard drive will go missing. Not the partition, but the whole physical drive. The system can't detect it at all anymore.
I reboot, nothing.
I go into the bios, nothing.
The drive is simple not there.
I open up the case and put pressur on the cables, to make sure that they are all secure, and there is no change.
And then, I go and unplug the cable for the drive, plug it back in, and it's back up and running as if nothing ever happened.
This doesn't happen often, only about every half year or so, but it doesn't seem to be only one brand of drives, and I know it happens to my family too.
I'm just curious as to what is causing this, and why removing the cable would fix the problem.

No, the cables don't stop working.
I just simply need to reseat the cables.
It works perfectly after I unplug it and replug it with the very same cable.
