Why does XP automatically reboot?

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-15 3:15

About 5min ago for some unknown reason, XP just suddenly restarted itself!

No really, it wasn't running anything out of the ordinary, but the operating system just started closing all my apps and files (fuck if it cared whether or not they were saved, thus the reason I'm a little bit PISSED OFF!!!) and restarted itself!

And no, there are no scheduled tasks that I'm aware of (I just checked) and no unfamiliar processes running either?! What the hell is going on here?!

I realize that it has probably been about a week since the last time I shutdown or hibernated this thing, but still... where the hell did this sudden death-attack come from?

Check you haven't been infected.

I'm not sure infection is a factor here.
I've seen this before on other XP machines. I've seen it on XP laptops to be specific, I've never really worked with XP desktops so I don't know what they do.

Alright, I'm a little calmer now.

The event occured about 3:00am EST and it was pretty much idle at the time.

Were you attending it while it shut down? If not it was probably automatic update. Stupid thing squeezes a reboot in on me from time to time when I'm not expecting it...

There was never a BDOS, it just started the "Restart" sequence.
