Actually, the unicode standard allows this character to be represented by whatever the hell vendors feel like, so OSes that do not display the apple logo are not inferior. Apple inserts this symbol into their fonts because it's easier to prosecute for trademark infringement than copyright infringement, and this logo is their trademark.
