buying a mac.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-12 23:13

so.

i decided to completely dump windows and every other microsoft product i use [mainly just windows and msn] about a month or two ago, and switch in full to linux. i was running windows 2000 pro, installed mandrake 10.3 or something that i already had on cd, it failed, two weeks later, i get ubuntu on cd and do a clean install.

two problems; i can't change my screen res to anything larger than 1024x768 [which is really pissing me off], and my wireless card isn't supported. i know ways around that, but with the recent wwdc a month ago and keynote today, a mac desktop is looking more and more appealing. i'm writing this from a [now outdated] ibook which i used for about a year before getting a custom built pc which i recently killed with linux.

i have this delicious large monitor that i'd like to keep, so right now it seems like my only option would be to get a custom mac mini. should i do it?

lol. stupid noob, figure it out and save the money and shame of owning one of the gayest machines ever to be called a computer.

gayest machines to ever be called a computer? macs are beautiful computers that actually work. and guess what? the default browser that ships with it -is actually decent-!

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-13 0:59

macs are for pedos

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-13 1:10

There's nothing Macs can do that some PC somewhere can't do better for less money. Don't do it man!

Iffff by that you mean boot up, and display cute bubbly browser effects.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-13 3:17

i love it how people buy macs because they say that the macs have a better looking theme or some other junk that can be perfectly emulated onto windows

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-13 3:24

ya, but macs just work, that's their selling point, the os and the hardware are MADE to work togeather, therefore less problems, i like macs and pc, but for different reasons

Look, if someone out there is such a sub-genius that they are considering buying a Mac in the first place, I say just let them.  I mean, if they buy a PC they'll probably be asking questions like 'how do I inserted DVD' on forums like this for the next year, and I can do without reading more of those sorts of questions.  Solution.... retard buys Mac....retard goes to Mac retards forums... we don't hear from said retard again except for the occasional 'will that run on my Mac?' question, to which the answer is always 'NO' anyway.

how is it retarded to buy a product that does the desired jobs that the user wants? this pc vs mac debate is the most pathetic shit ever and needs to fucking stop. have you owned a mac, windows users? actually owned one? no? shut the fuck up. do you own a windows machine, mac users? no? shut the fuck up.

and i'm sick of all these psuedo tech einsteins claiming one thing is better than the other. the line isnt getting blurred between the two products, its been completely erased. face it and move on.

jesus...

>>1 do whatever you want with your money. if it meets your needs and you enjoy the OS, go for it. apple products are reliable in terms of OS architecture and hardware, which seems to be what urked you about your other computer and its multiple OS's. i've been using a PPC G4 for over 5 years daily and its never let me down with a kernel panic or freeze, so i can attest for the stability.

I think it's safe to assume that most mac users at one point did own a Windows machine.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-14 0:50

can't even afford a computer.

Sure you USE one (at your "life partners" house), but your broke ass can't afford to own such faggotry.

are you even trying to troll, or did you give up from the get-go? come up with something more intelligent and then try to flame. this may take a while, i know, but at least give it the old community college try.

ok here is the scoop

if you have ever opened up a mac and tried to fix it you know why macs are not as good as PCs. A mac works out of the box; this is true. It works better than Windows out of the box. I will concede this. It does NOT work better than a pc one or two years down the road when some bullshit crazy part Steve Jobs made up in a drunken stupor (Read: "Flyback Transformer", "Logic Board", "I.O. Management Board", all of which I have heard fail on macs) dies and needs to be replaced.

Because when your mac is broken, it is broken. When my motherboard dies, I go pay $40-80 for a new motherboard. Mactards pay $100-200 for glorified Dell customer service.

Actually, Macs tend to have warranties. Granted it's only a year if you don't pay for the AppleCare, but I personally think the best idea is to buy the Mac and resell it on eBay in a year or three depending on if you bought AppleCare. PC users get a bit scared of this because non-Apple prices tend to go to shit after a month but Macs retain their value relatively well, maybe 20-30% less per year. This way you're always covered for warranty, get performance upgrades (guess what, you don't have to have a cry about non-expandability!) and the latest new feature\enclosure\OS X update. It's a decent system, just a different approach.

Additionally, the more common logic board (just some weird new euphemism for motherboard, it's hardly a "bullshit crazy part") problems of older Macs are all covered by extended warranty programs - just letting you know as it's probably these issues that you "heard fail on Macs". (Also, those were on laptops, and I'm pretty sure you can't buy cheap generic motherboards for your ThinkPad or Latitude or HP or whatever.)

The Mac mini isn't very good value, in my opinion it's a bit of a lame duck computer with some dumb design decisions that should have been altered in the Core Duo models but weren't. i.e., 2.5" hard drive. It's also not very "all in one", expect cables and shit everywhere.

My favourite Mac right now doesn't get as much press as the others - really think about ditching your monitor (again, eBay is a great tool when you're switching Macs!) and getting an iMac. While I can't vouch for the Core 2 Duo models, the 17" Core Duo model has had no significant problems (unlike MacBooks for instance) and is a generally amazing computer. Expect to find niceties like veeeery quiet operation (like, my Powerbook was louder), great speakers, the capability to play most Windows games decently, really good looks and pretty impressive specs in general.

Also, check into the educational discount. That plus the money from your monitor might be enough to get you a 20" or 24". Seriously, look past the Mac mini - it's underpowered and overpriced. But if you can bring yourself to eBay that monitor, the iMac does everything else so much better and will make your desk so much more tidy and nice.

i've expanded plenty of hardware in my G4 over its lifetime, if its any business of yours. i know how to work my machine just as well as i can tinker with my PCs harware, thanks. and if your software comment is in regards to my assertion that the line is all but gone between the two worlds, you are mistaken. that comment was put forth with Boot Camp in mind. try harder to shoot down what i am sucking next time, bucko.

Enjoy your DRM

P.S.: You still haven't acknowledged a good 20% of PCs aren't running Windows.

It seems you haven't either.

...who only cares for Adobe shit software and iTunes, which run in bot Macs and PCs...

Lol 20% of PCs not running Windows? Maybe in Lunix Torvald's house or something.

Name: funonymous 2006-09-15 1:44

saying 20% of PCs dont run windows is a bullshit figure that should disqualify you completely from any further discussion in this thread, lest you plaster this thread even further with your fecal facts. maybe (MAYBE) 10% of the PCs have a linux/alt OS partition of some sort to go with their windows OS, but even that is probably a very highballed figure.

I don't want to live on a planet where people like the retards in this forum are trying to convince each other of which product is superior to the other. I've used both. And each has ups and downs (like basically every product on the face of this Earth). Fuck off with your douchebaggery, the lot of ye. No point in calling someone a fag because they like a given laptop... Fucking retarded... Just get on with your life with either your mac or your PC and let everybody else keep to themselves... You're convincing fuck all nobody... I've a friend who detests the fact that I'm a Mac man and I just keeping saying that it isn't his laptop so it isn't his problem... Same principle applies here...

And just a personal observation from myself (The "faggot" Mac user apparently)... We aren't elitists and we most certainly don't flare off these insult fest forums... As far as I'm concerned, There's a bombardment of hatred from anybody who doesn't own a mac... Fuck off lads. If you love your PC so much then there's no need to be here trying to convince Mac users that they've made the wrong decision in the first place. Enough with these sinfully retarded fights... Enjoy your PC, enjoy your Mac and kindly fuck off...
