Okay, so imagine this: my mom's computer (which is plugged into the router directly) is in room A. My room is right next to her room. However, my computer was against the wall that I don't share with her room (eg, it was as far away from her room as possible). While my computer was in this location, whenever I tried connecting to WiFi I was told the connection was either only "good" or sometimes "bad," with 3 or 4 out of 8 bars. However, after I'd forwarded the correct ports, Torrentstorm always connected to torrents with green lights and download speeds were pretty fast despite only 3-4 bars of connection.
So yesterday I decided to move my comp against the opposite wall (incidentally, closer to the router). I didn't change any options, any config, nothing. I just unplugged my comp, moved it, plugged it back in. First thing I noticed was the connection was now reported as "very good," and I got a full 8 bars! I was stoked, of course, and fired up some torrents. However, I was dismayed to find that now I got all yellow lights and crap speeds. The correct ports are still forwarded, nothing has changed...wtf?
