IDE to SATA

My friend wants to know if he installs Windows on an IDE, and then somwhere down the road he gets the cord he needs to hook up his sata drive will he be able to transfer his information between the two when that time comes?

It's just me or is this question awesomely stupid? Install both hard disks, run Windows, copy files, ?????, profit? Am I missing the point?
