unlocking phones

maybe this is the right place to ask, maybe not. anywho.
i recently obtained a Sanyo v801sa vodafone for free from a garage sale. apart from no power, it seems to be in fine working order (i'm getting a charger from ebay). the person said she found it in a taxi cab. Evidently it's a japan only release phone, but it's supposed to be compatable with Europeanand US standards or something.

Here's the problem, vodafone is a branch (or subsidiary?) of Verizon wireless here in the states. I have cingular wireless. Evidently verizon uses a network called CDMA, while cingular uses GSM. I was wondering how i would go about unlocking this phone to work with my cingular sim card and it's respective service. I've been told the CDMA network is incompatable with the GSM one (from both service hotlines), but i've also heard it's still possible to unlock and change the phone to work on either network (from the interweb). I was wondering if anyone knew if i can or cannot unlock this phone for use in the GSM network, and how i might go about doing it. thanks in advance for any help.

She found the phone but didn't return it?  What an awful person!

there was no sim card in it whe she found it (donno why). there would be no way to find who it belonged to without the address book stored on those chips.

Or you could have checked the sticker inside the cell with the serial number and give it to the police so that they can contact the company and ask about the owner.

You can use Opera on phones.

According to the phone's specs it does NOT support CDMA. It's a UMTS phone supporting W-CDMA and GSM. You're fucked in a CDMA-only net.

Opera sucks sure there's an ebuild for opera but it just get dropped to /opt, it's statically linked, and it's CLOSED SOURCE, which means that it is a BINARY package.

where are you seeing those specs? it's clearly printed on the back of the phone that it;s:

QUALCOMM
3G CDMA

where are you seeing UMTS and W-CDMA and GSM? also, if it supports GSM, which is what cingular is, why doesn't it recognize my sim card?

also, what does opera have to do with anything? isn't that just a browser? i need this phone to work with my cingular service
