X850, absolutely.

7600 gt has pixel shader 3.0 = wins

radeon drivers suck

wait until AMD finishes the aquisition before trying an ATI again

Get the X850. It trashes the 7600 in performance. So what if the 7600 has SM3? It doesn't have the gut to drive it. And mister #4 probably never owned a Radeon before, and likes to repeat what biased people mindlessly shout. But, as you can see, this isn't the place to ask such a thing, people here love to talk but have no real knowledge to back it up. Find some benchmarks and you can't go wrong with your choice.

The X850XT PE might be better, but then, you could just put a factory OCed 7600GT against it, since the PE is just a factory OCed XT. They are about equal. The 7600gt runs cooler due to the 90nm gpu, even though NV gave it a shitty reference cooler. The X850XT wins in ATi biased games, and the 7600GT in NVIDIA biased ones. The X850XT, with 256bit memory and the extra pipelines might win at higher resolutions and/or with AA though. At 1280x1024 or lower, you aren't likely to see a big diference, unless it's your e-penor.

sorry, I used the ati 9000 line extensively and the drivers sucked a nut

also, I am intensely annoyed that one of the best cards ever made (the PCI Rage IIc) is no longer even rudimentarily supported in XP

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-01 13:04

I thought one of those cards could push 15khz for arcade resolutions?

the 7600GT draws less power

ATi's drivers are made of fail and lose and when you run out of video memory they tend to go STOP 0x00004028 - DO NOT WANT.

Surely, Catalyst Control Center is the worst piece of shit ever shitted by ATi.

Ain't that Omega Driver bearable?

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-03 22:12

I use the Omega Drivers and I've NEVER had a problem, not even ONCE. Of course I used the original drivers for some months before switching, but even then I never had any kind of crash/freezing.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-04 4:00

To tell the truth I rarely had problems but then again I rarely did stuff that would run out of video memory, or stuff other than games, and I was using the Omega Drivers and the control center from back when Catalyst Control Center didn't even exist (ah, sweet old times).

if you use Linux, go for Nvidia
