Help with partitioning a hard drive

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-27 0:07

I plan to reformat my hard drive, and I want to partition it, but I don't know how.

Could someone please guide me with simple directions.

Thank you.

Boot to dos.
Use fdisk to kill and remake what partitions you want.
format c:

Don't do >>2 unless your partitioning needs are very simple.  Better to get a boot floppy with a partitioning program.  A good free one is Boot It NG.  You have to pay if you want to install it's boot loader for more than 30 days or something like that, but if you just want it for formatting and partitioning, it's perfect.  (When it asks you if you want to "install BootIt NG to the hard drive", answer NO, and it will take you directly to the menu icons)

Thanks

I'm not sure what is best for my needs.

Mainly it's for personal use, separating data, and testing software.

WON'T WORK UNLESS YOU'RE IN AN OPERATING SYSTEM AND IT WILL NOT LET YOU GET RID OF OR RESIZE THE CURRENT BOOT OR SYSTEM PARTITIONS.

1. Download Knoppix (http://knoppix.com)
2. Burn ISO to CD
3. Boot to Knoppix
4. Launch qtparted
5. Profit!

Partition Magic is a good bet - make sure to make boot disks with it, it WILL let you resize your C: drive, it will let you specify a new partition table, then it will ask you to reboot, at which point it will execute before windows does, and it will run the requested changes to your partitions as a batch job. Go get a drink and a snack or something and sit back while it does that. When it is done, you will have a new partition table as per the setting you choose earlier in Windows.
