What to do with dying hard drive?

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-19 18:29

I've backed most important things up. Now, what should I do with my dying hard drive?
When I do scandisk, it freezes up. Defragging with O&O only made it worse. More than 80% is "red."
Should try and save it by formatting? Or should I just enjoy the last couple days its working?

No. 15 or 20% are required.

Try running SpinRite or HDD Regenerator.

If it does really die you shouldn't throw it away. Stash it in the attic or something. I read in the Smithsonian that a lot of computer parts andcell phones and things are not properly destroyed or recycled, so it's better just to leave it lying around.

Um, that's why you dispose of it properly. You can't just throw circuit boards and batteries in the trash (well, you can, but it damages the environment, and is illegal in many places).

That's exactly what I said, written shorter. You can't dispose of it properly because no one really knows how I think.

use a real filesystem, like UFS

You take it to a hazardous waste collection facility. All that needs to be done is removal of the hazardous metals. Circuit boards can be stripped in a chemical bath. For batteries, the electrolyte paste has to be removed. A lot of the metal can be purified and recycled. Any waste gets dumped in a toxic waste dump, where it won't leach into groundwater.
