Formatting HDs

Dear /g/, is there a proper way to format a HD, I read the Wikipedia article on how to format a Hard Disk and it said there were two ways.

Furthermore, I want to just install linux on it, is there any command line junk that I need to install linux on my PC or do I just put in the Ubuntu CD and let in install itself pretty much?
