Transferring data from desktop to notebook

How do I do this? I'm serious.
I've never needed to, so I don't know how.
If it is a simple procedure, please explain--
if not, /r/ links.

get a floppy disk.  put it in the floppy drive of your desktop.  copy shit to it.  take floppy disk out.  put it in the floppy drive of your notebook.  copy shit off of it.  repeat as necessary. (note: it helps to have a floppy drive on both computers)

the above can also be adapted for use with cd burners.  this is left as an exercise to the reader.

alternatively, just network them together and copy shit that way.

I've considered 1 GB USB keys.
But, I am most definitely going to network them together.
How do I do that?

Desktop is Dimension 8300
Notebook is Sony SZ 250

Desktop is Windows XP Home,
Notebook is Windows XP Pro

you should be able to just connect the ethernet ports of the two computers with a crossover cable (NOT a patch cable) and run the Network Setup Wizard (which is rather idiot friendly, so no fear of botching anything) on both.  make sure file sharing is turned on, both computers have a unique name, and both computers are set to the same workgroup.  copy required data files to/from shared folders (Windows automatically creates a 'My Shared Documents' or something like that, iirc.  you can set another directory as shared by right-clicking on it in My Computer and fiddling with the Sharing and Security option).  you will likely need to have Administrator access to do any of this.

this assumes you don't already have a switch or hub handy.  if you do, just plug both computers into the switch with normal patch cables and do the same thing.

note that this setup assumes you won't need internet access while the two computers are networked.  throwing internet into the picture confuses the situation somewhat.

If you're going to set up a permanent network, I suggest a Linksys wireless router. I have a WRT54G V4 (one of the best, even better than some newer models) and a wired BEFSR41 I found at a garage sale for $5.

The problem with routers is that you have to be somewhat network savvy to set them up quickly. Your other option is to acquire a network hub or switch. They're essentially dumb, meaning you don't get anything in the way of efficiency or security, but they're fine for offline networks, or behind a router.

With a hub, you can just set both comps to be in the same workgroup (MSHOME, WORKGROUP, whatever), enable file sharing (I just share entire drives, it's faster and less confusing to new users), and go.
