Wait for the new Intel processor?

At the moment, I am contemplating the purchase of a notebook.
However, my two hardware saavy mates told me to wait till
the end of the year, when the Core 2 Duo processor is released.
To me, there isn't much difference on the surface, between Core
and Core 2. Just the number 2. Could some of you fellas try
to convince me?
