Pentium D 930, hot - maybe no air?

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-30 19:56

I installed a Pentium D 930 in my machine but it runs around 50C when idle. It tops out just under 70C when running 100% on both cores. (Multiple video encoding, recording.)

It seems a little high given the thermal profile suggested by Intel, also I don't know what the power consumption is at any given time so it's hard to make a direct comparison.

Any suggestions? I'm using standard white paste thermal grease, not too much I think.

I have two 80mm fans and a PSU fan intake around the CPU HSF and I heard the Intel stock cooler now blows down to cool passive chipsets like on my ASUS P5LD2.

Would the outtakes be staving the HSF for air? Before this CPU my P4 2.6C ran about 40C peaking around 45.

Case is ANTEC 1000AMG

Correction; I meant my old CPU ran 30C peaking around 45C.

sounds pretty normal to me...

You're forgetting the fact that the D is based on prescott core which is know for hot temp, and C is based on northwood core. If you want to lower down your temp, you can either change the thermal paste to something like artic silver or do that and get a new HSF.

Check you HSF installation. I bought a 920 for my wife that idles @ 31 degrees celcius.
