A good mid-range image/paint program?

I'm looking for an image or paint program that has more features than say, MS Paint, but loads more quickly and uses less resources than say, Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.  What's a good in-between program?

GIMP's interface is made of win and lack of MDI.
