So I effed up my new harddrive...

Dearest /comp/

In my quest to install my new 200gb harddrive, I managed to screw up somewhere along the way. When I try to boot with the new one plugged in, I get an error message saying something along the lines of "oh shit, ntldir is missing."

I _think_ that I probably messed up in partitioning it. Put too large of a partition or something (which is odd, as my other 200gb harddrive didn't have this probelm). So...how do I fixed harddrive? If I plug it back in, I can't boot up, as I get the ntldir message.

Erm... you did format/partition the /new/ hard drive right?

The easiest method is to boot into the installation disc and go to the repair console (R from setup menu) and run these two commands to copy over the original files to the root of the partition/disk Windows is installed on:

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

Keep in mind you may need to adjust the lettering of the drives to what yours are labeled. Restart then boot as you would normally and cross your fingers. Worst case scenario is that your boot.ini file has been corrupted in which case it will need to be rewritten.

ntldr will not be found by the boot sector if your partitions were moved around when you added the new hard drive

what partition was windows originally on?

Furthermore, if you move it beyond the 5GB limit of the partition, it won't be found. There is a limit also in where it can be intermsof the whole HD.
