Okay, I am new to Linux, so I was wondering what kind of programs I should use for my basic needs. Such as, what is the music player of choice... and stuff.

What programs ? And do you prefer QT or GTK interfaces ? What are your needs. I suggest to take a look at your distro's repositories and to try some of them.
Music players, light weights :
-xmms
-mpd with mpc interface
are you serious? xmms is a old piece of crap. xmms2 is better, but the old xmms?
mpd is very nice though.
what i use:
shell: zsh
terminal: aterm
terminalmultiplexer: screen
irc: irssi
messaging (icq etc): bitlbee
email: muttng
audio: quodlibet & mplayer through shellscripts
video: mplayer. the only choice
filemanager: shell & rox-filer
windowmanager: pekwm
desklets: adesklets
torrent: transmission
etc.

what I use. *ed choices are those that, in my opinion, are no-brainers, the only good option.
Debian-based distro (actually a HD install of Knoppix)
KDE, but am getting increasingly unhappy with the bloat
* shell: bash
terminal: Konsole
* web browser: firefox
file browser: Konqueror
email: thunderbird
* image editor: The GIMP
paint program (ie not a serious image editor): KolourPaint
music player: amaroK (excellent player, pity it has KDElibs bloat)
IM and IRC: Kopete
video player: xine or Kaffeine, but intend to get Mplayer and test it.
package manager: Synaptic

Bash is a rather bad choice, it is very slow and uses a lot of memory. Try holding down your newline key and see if the prompts list without spaces. If they do not, try ZSH.
It does have some rather nice Unicode support however.

Another vote for ZSH. It should be the default shell for all distros and get rid once and for all of bash that's ten years late.
