Sony rootkits on DVDs?

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-05 18:10

So I've heard that there were(are?) rootkits on Sony-BGM CDs, but what about Sony DVDs. Through googling I haven't found clear-cut evidence that the DVDs also have rootkits, but I have seen alot of "yeah it's a logical assumption that they would have rootkits on them". So does anyone know for sure?

If you want specifics I'm talking about the Memoirs of a Geisha DVD.

I'd be surprised if Sony had put rootkits on any new DVDs (and not have the world know about it) after the shitstorm they stirred up over the CD debacle. I'm sure people would spot it far sooner than with the CDs since everyone's guard is still up. Furthermore, Sony's music division is a different division to Sony's DVD one. There was some crap about some German DVDs with boosted copy protection (interspersing corrupted blocks into the data) that got blown out of proportion and reported (incorrectly) as a Sony rootkit, but it wasn't even on a Sony release.

if it doesn't make you install its own player to watch it, it doesn't have a rootkit in the way the cds did
