UTP cabling

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-28 0:38

I've just been setting up a cat5 cable under the floor of my house, with a wall plate on each end. now, I figured that since a cat5 UTP cable is just copper wire, it would make no difference which position each wire was in, as long as they where in the same position at each end. but I've just finished the wiring, plugged in a cable to test it, and found that it doesn't work. if possible, could someone tell me what colour each of the following markings mean, and which colour each of them needs?
L+, L-, Aux, Earth, T3, R3, T4, R4

Use a voltometer to test for current on both ends on the same color wire for each wire.  You may need to recrimp if the wires aren't making contact with the copper in the jack, or if you stripped the ends too much/too little.

It's either T568A on both ends or T568B on both ends

You were right the first time, the colours aren't special they just need to match up at each end. You must have made the cable wrong.

Ethernet only uses cables 1, 2, 3, and 6.

make sure you use pairs though; that's the whole point of twisted pairs -- CMRR and all that.
