Best browser? I need recommendations...

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-19 17:51

Browser fanboys, please stay out. I’m not interested in LOL FIREFOX FTW! EVERYTHING ELSE SUX!!!

If you could, please tell me which browser is your favorite and a little bit on why. Please mention any drawbacks it may have as well.

Thanks in advance.

I use Opera for the fact it's got the fastest, most accurate rendering engine. I also like the fact it's functional with all the features you conceivably need; without the need to install insecure and unverified plugins. It also uses less memory than Firefox and runs faster as a whole, with a better UI.

Same as >>2.
Additionally, it doesn't just render quickly, it also speeds up your browsing by being nearly completely controllable with either the mouse (with mouse gestures), or only one hand on the keyboard (very useful for porn browsing). Further increasing browsing efficiency are numerous lovable little features, such as fast forwarding through image galleries, fit to width, etc, etc. Proper image scaling is also nice.
I honestly can't think of any real drawbacks atm... Oh, sometimes I wish it had a more detailed page info window like FF.

Internet Explorer 7 beta 2 FTW. Everything else sucks.

I'm also an Opera junkie. What can I say?

It's fast, small, and does so much out of the box. I've been using it since 3.50, yet I still find new shortcuts and useful features I didn't know about. Using any browser gives me the strangest sensation that I'm surfing with both arms tied behind my back. Also, as a software developer, I look up at Opera; what they've managed to do with so little space is truly amazing.

Downsides: the linux port has always been half-baked. The recent 8.* tree has some bugs that they still haven't fixed a year and something later (the ctrl-s always using *.html, anyone? It's also laggier than 7.*). I like Firefox's source viewer, which Opera doesn't have. Finally, Firefox's in-page search is a lot better.

I use firefox; it works quite well for me, though i am not what one would call a "power user."  It does what I ask, and I haven't had any issues with it.  Biggest downside i've noticed is that avi   and wmv files open in outside programs, though this is probably an issue of not having the right plugins or failure to adjust the options of the plugins i do have.

why would you want to waste precious disk space on a browser?  if you are using a legitimate os, it already has one installed
internet explorer is one of the best browsers out there.  it is conveniently integrated into the os, resulting in better functionality.  it can make up for lack of skill  on the webmaster's part, such as automatically playing movie files when they are tagged as images.  the installation of useful toolbars is a breeze, and activex makes life on the net more convenient.  why would you bother with anything else?

I already have IE, and I don't like it. I've heard so many good things about some of the other browsers, and I thought it might be time to switch. That's why.

As for "precious disk space," that's really not an issue. I have more than I’ll ever need, so "wasting" a little is no big deal (although if it makes my internet experience better, I don’t see how it’s really a waste at all).

Ditto, but I think the guys here want something that runs cross platform.

I used to use opera, and remember liking it a lot. I switched to firefox out of curiosity because I liked the look and feel, but in my mind, both are very good browsers. I might give Opera another try, but I already have all my RSS in Safari, so I doubt I'll switch permanently.

I use opera and I think the interface of it is made of epic win. Specifically, I use the beta release 2 of 9.0. It's also really fast. But you'd really have to see for yourself what it can offer for you.

As for problems I have had.. sometimes it started eating processor time with bullshit instructions on my willamette core processor, I am unsure why but it was rather rare. Also, I don't get this problem with a Venice core. The beta version crashes sometimes when saving a picture or such, but this is not too big of a problem as it always saves state before crash, loads fast and the stable release didn't have this crash.
Oh yea the built in source viewer sux, only available in beta.

This is the OP. I'm trying out Opera, and it seems like this might be the one I'll go with. I tried Firefox for q little bit, but just couldn't get comfortable with it. Thanks for your suggestions, everyone. One thing, though; is there a way to make it so Opera doesn't keep asking me if I want to save passwords? I've told it to save it for 4chan a dozen times, and it keeps asking.

Where's the Lynx love, peoples?

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-21 15:06

opera and firefox are pretty good. ive heard about lynx, wonder if its any good?

Lynx is crummy, try Links if you want a text based browser. It's got a GUI mode that's not based on any shitty toolkits. You can use it to look at pr0n in your framebuffer. I do.
