Thumb drive question

During Xmas, I bought one of those "Multi-tools" with the USB thumb drive.  Everything works fine (you know, since pliers break all of the time) except the thumb drive.  It became corrupt the first time I used it.  Do all thumb drives become corrupt easily, or did I just have a defective one?

Any thumb drive can get damaged, but cheapo crap ones tend to die more readily than decent brand ones. I've had an LG one for a year with no troubles, despite daily usage.
