Batch auto-renamer?

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-15 7:24

This is a little obscure, but I need to dummy many large batches of files, and the sheer amount of them means it would take AGES.  When I say dummy, I mean I want to for example take these:

Alpha.jpg, 356kb
Beta.jpg, 874kb

And I want to replace them both with a "dummy" jpeg file 1kb in size, so that I'd end up with Alpha.jpg, 1kb and so on and so forth.  Is there anything that will automatically take my files, dummy them, and rename the dummies like the originals for easy replacement?  I'm sure someone must have thought of something like this at some point or another.  Help, please--I've got to do this on such a large scale that I'll be renaming until next year.

Never heard of any program that does that, so your best bet might be to write a script that does just that. PHP, or preferrably Python, should be able to do that. As for how: RTFM.

Er, thanks for the link, but what do I search for exactly?  I didn't even know what I'd call such a program myself, so I'm not sure where to start looking.  I searched "dummy" and "replace" and etc with no luck.

I assume you must have found things like this before if you say they exist there, so a little help on search terms pls? :D

Use the dummy plug.

A small bash script would do the job. I'd do it for you, but I'm lazy.

it'd be easy using bash, python, or even php. If you're on windows, well....good luck with that :) Find someone knowledgeable in one of those languages, and ask them nicely :P

If you're on Windows, well... it'd be easy using Bash, Python, or even PHP. You can also use Perl or Ruby, as well as the GNU utilities and other third party free and non-free utilities.
