File Recovery

So I get the Windows Blue Screen of Faggotry. kay. I restart, and I basically get to where I'm loading up Windows (XP) and once it finishes loading, I instantly get the blue screen and it restarts again. So I go into DOS, right? I use the 'map' command to see what my drives are identified as, and I have my former C drive as "?" and it's labelled with FAT 16, and it should be NTFS (?) in the first place. So I do CHKDSK and it says I have an unrecoverable error, something like that. So I figure I'll have to reformat at best, but heres my question...

Does anyone know of a way to recover files from a disk like this?

Use another computer to download and burn Knoppix, boot from CD, copy files over network.
