WoW and Free Servers

About a year ago, I helped my friend set up WoW to play on emu'd servers.  Fast forward to now and I decided to give it a try myself.  I grabbed a torrent (All 4 discs, WoW Control Panel, and an update to 1.4.0--exactly the components I used to help my friend).  Setup went fine, as did the update.  When I tried to get onto a 1.4.0 server though, it kept giving me "version" bullshit.

I can't seem to find a good, up-to-date guide on this.  I checked wowstatus.net and most of their servers seem to be running 1.8.0 and up.  I grabbed all the updates I could find and got my copy to 1.9.4 (most of the servers were 1.9.4).  And it still gives me wrong version shit.  Someone clear this up please.  Do I need hacked updates or something?  I see many of the servers listing 1.9.0 hack, 1.9.2 hack, etc.  In any case, something just isn't working right, so a guide to what ver to update to to get this working right would be much appreciated.

No "just buy it" posts plz, as I most likely will eventually (emu'd servers mostly suck)--I just want to get a feel for it.

just fucking buy it and get a feel for it on a real server. that's the way anyone with a brain would do it.

He's more oblivious than I am, hence why I had to set the fucking thing up for him.  And apparently what worked back then no longer works today--shit seems to have changed regarding the updates and whatnot.  Back then it was as simple as start up WoWCP, find a game, and jump in :(

Maybe people want to playe world of warcraft (lol) but they don't want to play on blizzards servers since it's a pvm mmorpg it's mostly based around solo or group play and it's funner to play with friends.

Even if you have the money (which you should) to legitly buy the game and pay for it monthly, you'd have to be pretty stupid to enjoy a service like that (ie, mmorpgs).
