When I put a burnable DVD in my DVD drive, the icon for the drive goes from saying "DVD drive" to "CD drive" and then none of the programs I use to burn DVD's work. Previous DVD's and official DVD's can still be read fine, and the drive switches back to normal the instant I eject the blank DVD. There are no other errors like this.
Can anyone help?

Have you bought a new pack of DVDs recently? I had a similar problem when I bought a new cakepack of Verbatim 8x DVD-Rs, and discovered certain versions of my Sony DVD writer were incompatible with them. The solution was to download the latest drive firmware and reflash the drive. Works fine now.

No, haven't bought a new pack. How would I go about updating the firmware and reflashing the drive? Is that anything like updating the drivers?

Not quite - this can actually destroy your drive if it goes wrong. Have you tried different blank media first of all?

No, I only have the one stack of DVD's on me. I seem to remember this happening before, but for the life of me I can't remember how I fixed it.
