Wireless Cards

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-14 23:47

I just got a laptop, but it doesn't have any kind of wireless capability...

I need a PCMCIA Wireless Card right? I have no idea what's good or bad or what to watch out for, so could anyone recommend a decent one? I'd rather not pay too much, so one that has a decent bang-for-buck for its range/stability would be great.

Thanks in advance.

I approve of Lucent Orinoco cards. Got mine off ebay, paid practically nothing.

I hear a lot of good things about the Orinocos... but they're all 11b standard. Am I unlikely to need 11g in the forseeable future?

Also, what's the difference between the silver and gold cards?

I found out that the difference between the Silver and Gold versions are 64bit and 128bit encryption respectively, also, that 802.11b can go at 11Mb/s and g can do 54Mb/s.

I'm mainly going to be using the card for internet stuff, but occasionally for transferring over a LAN, and playing (probably quite high bitrate) videos over it.

So the question still stands: Do I really need a g standard card? And why can't I find any Orinoco cards in the UK or on eBay that are g compliant?
