need foorbar2k help

just got foobar2000.

I don't get it.
I enabled the database, and let my computer slow down for an hour while foobar went through my 50GB of music, and then the "default" playlist had every one of my songs in it.  I wanted to play songs by artist, or by album, like you do in Winamp-- type in an artist, a list of all the songs with the artist's name pop up, and you play them like a playlist.
Today I start up foobar, and my default playlist has one song in it.  I found that database search thingy, but it doesn't work.  Apparently the database is empty-I can't even find the songs I'm playing right now by searching in database.  I can find them by searching the playlist, though.  I click "scan" in preferences again, and it flashes up a window for a 30th of a second and then disappears.  what happened to my database, and can I even do this?

I saw screenshots of people's columnsUI that group songs by artist and by album.  How do I do this?  Do I need a lot of code?

Yeah, if anyone knows of any good FAQ's with screenshots of Foobar in general, could you please posts the links? It would be much appreciated! ^_^

already did.  not much help, condsidering it's all on one thread on one forum that's posted by everybody that already has it and never needs to ask it.
The wiki isn't much help either-it told me the dll I needed to download but not how to use it.
