Transparent Gnome-Terminal

and I am back.

What package do I need to start fooling around with to get true alpha transparency in program windows?

Look up X Composite extensions.

Get XGL. The software compositor that's been around for quite some time is a piece of shit, but XGL will use your hardware to do transparency along with a bunch of other cool stuff.
