How could half the Internet just go down?

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-07 5:31

Something is blocking me from accessing a number of sites, probably half of the places I've tried to go today, as the title implies.

First thing I thought was that maybe my college resnet's grip is getting tighter. Indeed, school websites and Wikipedia are among the sites most likely to not be broken, but this doesn't explain why I can go here but not to, say, Something Awful, unless my going to SA generates 100000x more traffic than my coming here and they want to put a lid on that (even though I never broke our 2GB upload limit).

Or hell, a major ad server just crashed, possibly one hosting the kind of ads which, if they fail to load, take the pages they live on down with them.

Probably a temporary DNS or or switch problem. If it isn't resolved in a day contact your ResNet help desk.

Sometimes the internet companies get snitty with each other and deny peering as well. ^^
