OS for new computer?

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-21 13:47

I'm leaning heavily towards Gentoo since it's what I know, but has anyone got any other suggestions? Frugalware looks interesting, I always approve of any project with a Keep It Simple philosophy, but I'm used to having a powerful package manager, and I don't know anything about pacman. Is pacman particularly powerful? Does it resolve dependencies etc?

It's an Athlon64 btw and I do intend to use a 64 bit OS.

I have never used frugalware, but pacman is from arch and its a really nice package manager. You should not find anything lacking that you are used to in emerge.

Do you and your friends just sit on world4ch all day scanning boards for the word "Gentoo"?

Yeah when I googled for pacman (after asking about it here of course, because who the hell googles before asking questions amirite) Arch turned up, and I've heard a couple of people claiming that Arch is super great.

I've decided to go ahead with Gentoo but I've partitioned off space for an additional 2 roots for experimenting with other distros. I'll try Arch or Frugal on one of them, maybe use the other for trying out BSD.

It's more like a knee-jerk reaction a lot of geeks have.

I have the same reaction, and I'm a Gentoo weenie myself. I even have a red stripe on my case to make it go faster.

VROOM VROOOOM!
