Windows Desktop skinning

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-19 14:37

I've been using Windowsblind for awhile now, is there any other good alternatives? not that it's bad but i want to try something new. DesktopX? or something else?

use lunix lol

Style XP but it sucks.

You don't want skinning, you want performance. You don't use window decoration, you use window areas. You don't benefit from gay animated maximize butan, you benefit from faster applications.

How do you know what he wants?
Also, skinning doesn't always mean extra system load... some skins can be more efficient/have less effects than vanilla XP.

I know what he wants, even though he might not know what he wants.

No XP skin will be faster than no-skin, as XP skins are overpainted bitmaps. Just have GDI draw windows without skinning for the most performance.

Spoiler: in "Classic Style", it is still bitmaps, just ones that have been selected to look like Windows of the past. They're generated once when you go to the display options and set what colors you want, then they're handled as bitmaps by Luna.

So it doesn't disable Luna? I didn't know as this differs from how theming works in Windows 2000 (using third party tools). How shitty. Oh wai-, in the 5 minutes I've used XP for, I recall I did notice better performance after disabling the gay theme. Maybe it's just because it's a simpler theme.

Wait, what about the command windows? Luna doesn't theme these.

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-20 15:32

Question: Just how much of the system resources is actually saved by not using skins? 0_0;

o rly?

So why does killing the theme service not have an effect then?

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-20 19:34

The effect is minimal, winxp runs equally fast with and without the themes service and themes enabled on my 166mhz Pentium MMX. Ram usage in both cases hovers around 60mb and no noticable slowdowns.

It might depend on your configuration though, and what theme you use. Little effect for me though.

Jesus Christ and his seven dwarves, how the hell are you running XP on a Pentium 166?

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-21 13:19

Slowly, no doubt.

No it's not as slow as you might think. The computer has 128mb of RAM so with 60mb working set it still has plenty of free RAM for running apps. Responsiveness is good, though I must admit programs load a bit slow. And sometimes when browsing web, on the more complex websites the scrolling is not smooth (but that happened with windows 98 too). Actually boots faster than win98.

Basically it is optimized to the extent where it is silly. 350mb windows xp folder anyone?

Lies, or extremely streamlined install using XPLite or something. The bog standard XP has a commit charge of well over 100Mb right out of the gate.

Not a lie, I posted a screenshot on the old computer thread in g actually.. but that expired. But yes, that's it, nlite is actually what was used for this. The windows CD was only like 200mb total with integrated SP2. Ofcourse I wouldn't install standard xp with all the stuff it comes with on a 166mhz computer with only 128mb of RAM and a 2gb HDD, it alone would consume most of the hard drive lol.

E'nuf callin somebody's bluff. So how does someone go theme or skin less and what does it look like?

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-21 17:26

Even after stripping out all the crap and disabling all the services from XP SP1, I wasn't happy with it on 256MB of RAM. There was far too much swapping under normal usage.

It wasn't until I stuck an additional 512MB in there that I could live with it.

It looks like 2000. To completely disable any themes, open services.msc, and set the theme service's startup to manual.
