Laptop overvoltage

Can I run my Thinkpad, with a 16v center-positive 3.5A draw rating, off an 18.5v center-positive power supply? Will the extra 2.5v fuck anything up?

Yes it will. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT EVER use a different kind of adapter for electronics like these. Always get the exact voltage and amp requirements. I once plugged in a 18.5V, 4.9A to a Presario 2500 laptop that used 19V, 4.74A. The extra amps and the less voltage was enough to produce that sickening smell of burnt electronics in just a few minutes.
