Screen Substitute for Linux Red Hat

Could anyone tell me of a substitute for 'screen' in a Linux Red Hat with a very limited gcc?

The only one I can find is dtach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dtach). Why do you want a substiute, anyway? screen is the best terminal manager there is. I have the feeling you want something other than what you're asking for. What is it you want to do?

i have a web host, which i can access through SSH, but the gcc isn't working very well there (probably root-limited?). When I try to activate screen it says this:
'Cannot access '/dev/pts/0': No such file or directory'
