Unfortunately, the DirectShow codecs (as used by Media Player, Media Player Classic, BSPlayer, etc) tend to perform faster than VLC's, so you may be better off trying to solve the problem.

1. Uninstall all codecs (including but not limiting to codec packs, FFDShow, XviD, DivX, DivX 3.11, etc.)
2. Uninstall all players (including but not limiting to Windows Media Player, RealOne, QuickTime, Media Player Classic, etc.)
3. Install latest FFDShow
4. Install Windows Media 8 and 9 series codecs (Google or search microsoft.com for standalone versions; Microsoft calls them "for developers" or some commercial shit like that)
5. Install Media Player Classic (try as many versions as you can, each is just an executable)

That's all you need. Oh, if you wanted suport for those shitty QuickTime and Real, use QuickTime Alternative and Real Alternative, although these tend to break some versions of Media Player Classic, unfortunately.

Do NOT use codec packs, do NOT install the shitty Windows Media Player 7/9/10, it's bullshit, do NOT have anything to do with DRM, DO delete any .WMV or .ASF file that doesn't play, DO ignore QuickTime and Real if you can.

Amend that to "shitty codec packs". The good ones (http://hellninjacommando.com/defilerpak/ and CCCP) basically are ffdshow these days.

That's interesting. I have a 3GB HD rip that plays choppy on everything except VLC, where it plays just fine.
