DVD burning is sad

So, I got a fancy DVD burner and am attempting to understand it.
Basically, I want it so I can burn "files that I watch on my computer" onto these dvd-rs, and the make them into "things I can watch on my TV".
I am using Nero vision, since it tells me I have to have files like .bup .ifo .vob or such in order to win, and it says nero vision can do this.
So I go into this program and I add the .avi file and menu and such, and then I click "Go Burn it now" or whatever and then my computer freezes 30 seconds later.

Am I doing it wrong? Is there another program I should be using?

It should work, but I don't know what's your problem; have you tried standard Nero? Not the Express crap or anything, just the original one, version 6 or above.

Verify your IDE cable is 80 wires and in good condition (not bended over, no angles, etc.).
