Hard drive cache

I'm thinking of getting a new hard drive, and i'm wondering what performance difference is there between a harddrive with 8MB cache or 16MB.

I remember when the 8MB ones came out, several sites did reviews and said performance was nearly the same as the 2MB ones.  If you want performance, get a 15krpm drive for those files and a slower one for things where speed doesn't matter (stored video and music since playback needs hardly anything, etc.).

It's much better for transferring very large files, and you'll see the difference. If you don't transfer stuff, then it probably isn't worth it. Most people pass off HDD benchmarks as neglible because you know what? They are. The value will only show itself over time, as that 4ms saved builds to 12 hours a year.

As for >>2, I recommend against high RPM drives. They're hotter, costlier, and mechanically more volatile. That's just an opinion, so if you want the latest and greatest go for it.

Cooling a HD takes hardly any air flow.  In smaller builds I've found just being near the PSU's intake draws enough air across it.  If you are using some sort of crippled, cramped pre-built computer, then by all means, consider this an issue.

Completely wrong in my experience with them.  They tend to fail a lot less often.  15krpm drives typically aren't used by consumers (many consumer drives come with warnings against 24/7 usage) and tend to be built for much harder work loads. 

I tend to buy refurb 15krpm drives too, which I never do otherwise.  New vs. new would probably be even more favorable.

Yea higher than 10000 RPM drives are usually much better built than normal consumer grade drives. But they are also quite expensive and small in comparison to normal consumer drives. (usually use smaller platters for better reliability)

 I'd say 7200 RPM ones are best choise for average home use. 8mb is good enough also, 16mb only if you are looking into some really expensive fast drive.

Hard disks have cache.

But guess what? Your OS does the same thing too. So it makes almost no difference since the OS is doing it anyway.
