Transferring data

I have ~21GB of anime and some other data that I need to transfer as I am installing a new OS. I'm on a linux system, but unfortunately I did not think ahead in terms of partitioning, such that my entire root partition is on /dev/hda and my home partition is __not separate__. I'll be migrating from SuSE linux to another distribution -- is there any way to transfer this data without having to compress it and put it on some other media? I have some space left on the HDD, perhaps I could add a new partition and shove all my data there then delete the rest of the partition table?

If you have the space, adding another partition and copying stuff over there is the safest way to keep the data intact. Transferring to another computer via network is an even easier way.

On the new distro there should be something in the installation allowing you to keep the existing filesystem intact including the home directories. You really shouldn't have to do much there unless you plan on re-partitioning/formatting etc.
