Organizing Music Collections

Anyone know of any good standalone programs for this?

This remains the greatest mystery of all time.
I have tried looking for one before but got lost in the shitstorm of ad-laden software, "shareware" (the term means a totally different thing nowadays) and the fact that everyone and their cock has written a shitty program to organize music collections. I wish I could help you, but all I can do is an age.

Aye,   it's more then a little tedious going through my large collection of MP3s and retagging them individually.  The fact that everything is in a big mess with stuff I ripped from my own CDs and stuff I downloaded makes it even worse.

A lot of my friends just use iTunes and let it take over but I do it manually and use foobar2k.  I doubt I'm the only one here that does this; but would anyone else be willing to share their manual orgranisation method and the reasoning behind it?

do it manually, put each band in a folder and name the song, and use windows media or itunes to play,works like a charm.

I organize depending on how things are downloaded...1 song occassionally v.s entire albums. This is exactly what we want a magical program to do: something to examine tags, rename files accordingly and put them into a folder subject to our own organization scheme. That is free and isn't full of spyware/won't corrupt your harddrive.

Personally I just go by album, use WMP to play it and maintain it in it's own database.

As for how to sort, I recommend either '%artist%\%album%\%track% - %title%' or '%artist%\%album%\%track% - %artist% - %title%' for compilations.

What the hell is wrong with you people? It's not like it's some huge secret.

I just tag my mp3's with MusicBrainz Tagger/Picard and put all the mp3 files in one folder. My media player has a media library which I use to find and queue songs.

How do you deal with single tracks?  eg. you don't care enough to download their entire album but only one or two songs from it

What about non-English songs?  Do you romanised the album and artist name or do you store everything in unicode (both tag and pathnames)?

Seriously, take a look at musicbrainz.org - it's reduced tagging time for me with over fifty hours (yeah, I have a lot of music). It's fucking ultimate. If the MusicBrainz tagger can't handle it, I use MP3 Tag Tools, which is open source and really good.

I'm >>11 and I just looked at Mp3tag that >>7 posted. It looks better than MP3 Tag Tools. I can also note that I use foobar2000 to listen to music, but don't use it's database/library function.
