$500 laptop, good deal for this capability?

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-26 20:13

I have a nice desktop system at home, but lately I haven't been able to take advantage of it.  So I decided to take advantage of the after Christmas sales to get a laptop.   Because I live in Alaska the shipping charges for online auctions are too much for me to handle, so please don't suggest them.

At my local CompUSA I bought a V2000 Compaq Presario for $500 (728 MSRP).  The AOL deal would have made it $375 initially but would make me pay $60 more than I would save by the end.

The one I bought has:
AMD Sempron 2800+
256MB RAM
40GB HD
CD/RW + DVD ROM

The reason this V2000 is on sale is that there is a newer version that has 802.11g standard.  Using Compaq's customizer, even with the most barebones components (Sempron 3000+ being the only difference), their price is at least $728 after rebates and that's without the extras included in my current setup that would boost that price to close to a thousand.

So I know I have a great deal compared to the manufacturer's site except for the missing wireless capability (solved with a $10 adapter on sale).

I checked auctions with free shipping, but the closest priced laptops were ancient 500mhz pentium IBM thinkpads or a suspicious offer such as:

"Toshiba Satellite P4 3.2 Ghz new in box w/ free shipping and an instant purchase price of $450!"

...from an unrated seller created a few days ago.

So do I have a keeper with my V2000 Presario, or should I return it?

Do you really have to ask that? New and unrated eBay sellers suddenly presenting dozens of improbable bargains on desirable goods should be a five alarm warning signal right there. Put it this way: if you suddenly feel a burning desire to be fleeced of your $450, click that "buy it now" button without a second thought. You've got a good price on that Presario there, and the security that if it goes wrong you've got someone you can take it back to and shout at.
