Older Win games kicking out suddenly.

Idinaloq, Krush Kill N' Destroy, Frontlines, and so on.
I had a HD crash and lost my settings, then reloaded everything, and I must have done something to get these to play but can't remember for the life of me what it was. If there's an FMV, I get it, get to the title screen, and anything I click shuts it down with no error message. If FMV is disabled/CD not present, I skip to the title screen, click whatever, shuts down. Idinaloq I get to ship selection, then after the girl finishes talking it shuts down. What's going on here? Anyone have this before and fix it? Is this a problem with default XP settings, or is it a driver problem?

Try right-clicking the .exe file, go to compatibility or somesuch and choose to run in win95 (or whatever) mode.

ah, found the thread. New problem. This hasn't fixed the problem on my friend's new computer from XMas. It still kicks you out without warning, or even an error message.
Any options in control panel that also affect games? Tried all the compatibility stuff, didn't work.
