I am trying to play a file that is encoded in h.264 but I can't. Apple says quicktime can do it, but I have updated quicktime and it can't do anything. Where can I find a codec to play these files?

I was gonna suggest you use CCCP codec pack or the standalone ffdshow filter but.. what OS do you have, windows, osx, what?
If windows just google for cccp codec pack, it includes the ffdshow filter and it's configured appropriately too. (you can use windows media player after installing that to play h264 encoded files - or use one of the included players)
