No sound in FuhQuake (Ubuntu 5.10 x86)

I'm having an issue with FuhQuake 0.31 Build 675 on Ubuntu 5.10, in which SNDDMA_Init fails for one reason or another. It either says:

"Could not toggle." (in-game console)
"/dev/dsp: Broken pipe" (terminal)

-or-

"Could not open /dev/dsp" (in-game console)
"/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy" (terminal)

I think the error message depends on the input and output resources defined in GNOME (Multimedia Systems Selector), but I can't seem to reliably reproduce either one with specific combinations. So far I'm using a stock Breezy setup with the exception of some additional Gstreamer stuff for non-free media formats. Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

It's because it's using OSS, and there's already a soundserver running. Try making it use that soundserver, or kill esd/arts.
