Looking for deals on hard drives.

Anyone know of some good deals on hard drives (120+ gb)? I've been looking around, but I don't know which is a good price:functionability ratio...

I'm also looking for new (quieter) computer fans if anyone knows of good prices on those.

Buy Western Digital.  Buy nothing but Western Digital.  A Maxtor will die at least twice in its lifetime and require a ground-up reformat, unless you want to take it to a data recovery pro and pay out the ass.

I have a Western Digital WD2000 200-gig that I got for $80 on Ebay and it hasn't failed me yet.  I don't know what they do, but they do it right.

I happen to like my Seagate.  It's quite zippy and quiet, even when under heavy disk reading/writing.  My Western Digital is OK.  The first one I got I had to RMA after a week, but the replacement is holding up fine.  The Maxtor in my server has a whiney servo.

Seagate for the win.

wd = shit, i had a 40gb and it lasted about 8 months
maxtor = also shit, they heat up way too quickly
fujitsu = no clue.. i don't use scuzzies
hitachi = they suck less now, they used to suck when IBM had their deathstars....
seagate = the best... i work at a computer shop and through testing HDDs out of about 20 Seagates, 2 failed... where as i had stacks of Maxtors and WDs all around.

Thus, I recommend Seagate. Or Hitachi now...

PROTIP: You will hear horror stories about every brand. I had a western digital die on me in 14 months, but on the other hand, I know a lot of people happy with WDs, and a loooooot of people unhappy with IBMs even though I had good experiences with an IBM drive. You just can't make a decision based on the experience of a few people because it's too random.
I recommend WD, but the brand that really matters is not the brand of your HD manufacturer, it's the brand of your backup media manufacturer (Recommendation=Verbatim btw).

Man, I wish hardware manufacturers would focus more on reliability and efficiency.

Anyway, as things are, focus on redundancy (e.g. a RAID 1 setup).

The best backup media in the world is manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. Only the PastelDisc line from Verbatim (NOT ColorDisc or the standard lines) are Taiyo Yudens. Other Verbatims are Mitsubishi Chemicals, manufactured in India or similar, still high-end, but still not nearly as good as a Taiyo Yuden disc.

Plextor branded discs are Taiyo Yudens too, and you may also find stacks of 50 or 100 Taiyo Yuden OEMs which are worth every penny and 10 times more.

Whatever brand you get, make sure it never gets hot.  And personally, I think it's well worth the extra money to get a quiet HD like the Seagate or Samsungs.

I honestly havn't had much problems with Maxtor or WD, though I do have a few Seagates that have shitted on me a few times.  It's expected though, since I have used them harder and long than the other 2.

The good HD deals just past 2-3 weeks ago during Black Friday and it's aftermath.  I didn't get much though, all of the good stuff got snaged quick.  So I only came home with a 120 seagate from best buy.  Though I did get a 250 Maxtor off Compusa.com which is 60 bucks after rebate.
