codec

Recently I've hit a few snags playing some videos, they're everyday .avi videos but I guess they're compressed weirdly 'cause my 'Media Player Classic' can't play them. Soooo I need to know some good codecs for it I'd really like to watch these videos...

Er you need to know which codec the movie is encoded in. There's no such thing as a "good codec" in this context.

i recommend that you get the program, AVIcodec.  it will show you both the video and audio codecs a multimedia file was encoded with.  otherwise just use VideoLAN (VLAN).  i have yet to find something it can't play.

Those 3 usually does most formats just fine, and should be able to playback most stuff you throw at it :)

Install XviD when you already have ffdshow? This is pretty useless.

If you really don't already have stuff, get http://hellninjacommando.com/defilerpak/ and then enable VfW mode in ffdshow.

VirtualDub also shows the codec IIRC, or at least the fourCC code.  Then it's just a matter of finding it.
