Random restarts and odd temps

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-09 17:10

I have a computer here that randomly restarts, but usually during games. I thought was the CPU overheating so I checked the tempature and it says its averaging 120C!!!!! This can't be right. Any other ideas?

It can be right if the fansink is crap, the fan is going bad, or it's been badly fitted. Check your airflow (jumbles of cables are bad), clean any crud out of the fan, reseat the heatsink with a fresh layer of thermal paste. If that doesn't help, replace the heatsink altogether.

Are you sure it's not reporting Fahrenheit?

120 fahrenheir is too low to be true.

My guess would go to your power supply.

It's a WinXP box right or?. if so...
check System -> Advanced -> "Start And Restore" -> Settings -> [Un-check] Restart Automatically

That should make the box show a bluescreen with the error rather than WinXP's default behaviour of rebooting at once if such an error occurs. Return later on with the messages of the BSOD, and i'll see if i can make sense of it.

But usually MS's BSODs does'nt make much sense and one must guess :|
